Justice for Ashifa: The story of Horrific Rape and Murder- Why Does People says ‘Beti Bachao’?

Gavel, books and handcuffs on wooden table

An eight-year-old girl was held captive, starved, sedated and repeatedly raped inside a ‘devisthan’ in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district. A week later, her raped and mutilated body was found in the woods of Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir. Since the incident came to light less than two days ago, the country has been reeling from shock and outrage. Accordingly, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said: “I assure that I stand committed not just to ensure justice for Ashifa but also seek exemplary punishment for those responsible for a crime whose brutal savagery has shamed humanity”. Overall, we need collective disobedience against rape in India – If these cases don’t shake the conscience of this nation where will the future generation go? Is beti bachao just a slogan? When will we become intolerant to crimes against women? Indian Government has kept on failing to answer all those questions.
